ABOUT ELIZABETH ANN MACGREGOR:
Scottish born Elizabeth Ann Macgregor began her career as Curator/Driver of the Scottish Arts Council's Travelling Gallery, taking exhibitions on board a converted bus all over Scotland. This experience fired her commitment to engaging new audiences with the work of living artists.
After three years working in the Arts Council of Great Britain on a program of support for regional galleries, she spent ten years as the Director of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, building it into one of the most respected contemporary galleries in Britain and relocating it to a converted 19th century school.
She took up the Directorship of the MCA in 1999 during a period of great financial instability. She developed a new funding model with the NSW Government and the Australia Council as key stakeholders and encouraged new sponsors and major philanthropists to support the Museum. Since she introduced free access, attendances have increased five fold. She was particularly concerned to attract the younger demographic and to engage with audiences from Western Sydney and regional New South Wales. As the MCA is the only museum in Australia dedicated to exhibiting and collecting contemporary art in Australia, she has also developed the MCA’s national profile.
In 2003 she was awarded a Centenary Medal for services to contemporary art and in 2007 received the Equity Trustees CEO award for Significant Innovation. Last year she received two significant awards, the 2008 Veuve Clicquot Award and the Australian Business Arts Foundation Dame Elisabeth Murdoch award. She is passionate about making art accessible to everyone and is an advocate for the arts on all levels.
